AEM electrolyzer
An electrolyzer built around an anion exchange membrane. It can use non-precious catalysts such as nickel. Hydrogen gas plants →
Ammonia cracking
A high-temperature, catalytic process that splits ammonia (NH₃) into nitrogen and hydrogen. Hydrogen gas plants →
Balance of plant (BOP)
Everything in a plant apart from its main unit. For a hydrogen plant it includes power electronics, water treatment, gas drying and purification, compression, storage and safety systems. Hydrogen gas plants →
BESS (battery energy storage system)
A complete system that stores electricity in batteries, including the cells, BMS, thermal management, power conversion and controls. Battery energy storage systems →
BMS (battery management system)
The electronic controller of a battery. It monitors the cells, protects them, balances their charge, estimates state of charge and health, and communicates with other equipment. Battery energy storage systems →
Capture rate
The share of the CO₂ in a gas stream that a capture system removes. CO₂ capture systems →
Carbon molecular sieve
An adsorbent with very small pores that lets oxygen enter faster than nitrogen. It is the adsorbent used in PSA nitrogen generators. Nitrogen gas plants →
CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation and storage)
The chain of capturing CO₂ from a source, then using it in products or storing it permanently underground. CO₂ capture systems →
Depth of discharge (DoD)
The share of a battery's capacity that has been used. A battery with 90% usable depth of discharge delivers 90% of its nominal energy. Battery energy storage systems →
Electrolyzer
A device that uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen gas plants →
Flue gas
The exhaust gas from a furnace, boiler, kiln or engine. It is mainly nitrogen and contains CO₂, water vapour and trace pollutants. CO₂ capture systems →
Green hydrogen
Hydrogen made by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity such as solar or wind power. Hydrogen gas plants →
IP rating
A code for how well an enclosure resists dust and water. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. Battery energy storage systems →
LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate)
A lithium-ion battery chemistry known for thermal stability and long cycle life. Each cell has a nominal voltage of 3.2 V. Battery energy storage systems →
Membrane gas separation
A method that separates gases by the different speeds at which they permeate through a thin membrane. It is used for nitrogen generation and for CO₂ capture. CO₂ capture systems →
Nm³/h (normal cubic metres per hour)
A measure of gas flow. It gives the volume of gas delivered each hour at normal reference conditions of 0 °C and 1.013 bar, so flows of different gases can be compared fairly. Nitrogen gas plants →
PEM electrolyzer
An electrolyzer built around a proton exchange membrane. It handles high current density and rapid changes in load. Hydrogen gas plants →
Permeate and retentate
In a membrane system, the permeate is the gas that passes through the membrane and the retentate is the gas that stays on the feed side. CO₂ capture systems →
PSA (pressure swing adsorption)
A process that separates gases by passing them through a bed of adsorbent at high pressure and then releasing the pressure to clear the bed. Two beds work in turn so the output is continuous. Nitrogen gas plants →
Purity
The percentage of the product gas that is the wanted gas. Nitrogen at 99.999% purity contains no more than 10 parts per million of other gases. Nitrogen gas plants →
State of charge (SoC)
How full a battery is, shown as a percentage of its capacity. Battery energy storage systems →
VPSA (vacuum pressure swing adsorption)
A form of PSA that regenerates the adsorbent bed under vacuum. It uses less energy per unit of gas and is mainly used for large oxygen plants. Oxygen gas plants →
Zeolite
A crystalline adsorbent that holds back nitrogen from air. It is the adsorbent used in PSA and VPSA oxygen plants. Oxygen gas plants →
